Picture this. You hire an intern that is good at spreadsheets. You are aware they have this talent. You put them to edit emails. They are not that good at emails.

Such a scenario is made worse when the persons hired to do the spreadsheets are not as good as the intern. Talent is wasted and the amount of business value that is created is less than optimal.

A core aspect of Lean Philosophy is the elimination of waste. This waste includes the wastage of team member talent. The problem is that in many corporate settings, the talent of team members cannot be utilized because we are not aware of this talent. It is simply an issue of measurement.
